The Review receives thousands of submissions of poetry, prose (non-fiction, fiction, flash fiction, etc.) and art from around the world. For samples recently published work, visit our online archive.

We accept submissions of previously unpublished poetry, prose and art. Simultaneous submissions are welcome. Accepted work is for first North American rights. Please note that we are unable to pay contributors. Contributors will, however, receive two complimentary copies of the issue in which their work appears and may purchase extra copies at discounted rates.

Please read the following guidelines carefully. Submissions not adhering to them will be not be considered.

All text should be typed and prose double-spaced. Prose submissions should be 5,000 words or less. Poetry submissions should be limited to five poems or fewer. Contact information should be on each page of the submission.

Art may be submitted in electronic format (as an e-mail attachment or on a CD) large, high quality PDF files are preferred. Please format your work accordingly. All art will be printed in black and white with the exception of cover art.

Submissions sent via regular mail should include a self-addressed stamped envelope, phone number, e-mail address or other contact information that allows us to reach you with queries. Unless otherwise indicated, we will assume we may recycle unused manuscripts. You will be notified of acceptance or rejection by mail and email. Considering the size of our staff and quantity of submissions, notification takes between three and six months. Note: If an sase with adeqate postage is not included, there is no guarantee authors will be contacted if the ms is not accepted.

Submissions sent via email should be sent as an attachment in rich-text format or as doc. Docx files will not be accepted. The type of submission (Poetry, Prose, Review) should be indicated in the subject line. The body of the email should have a normal cover letter with adequate contact information in the signature field.

Portland Review will only consider one submission per writer, per reading period.

The Portland Review accepts submissions from September 1 until March 1 each year.
