The Review receives submissions of poetry, fiction, and art
from all over the world. For some samples of work we've recently
published, see the index
of recent work on this site.
Our guidelines are simple. We accept submissions of previously
unpublished fiction, poetry and art. We do not accept electronic
submissions of written work. Simultaneous submissions are
permitted. Accepted work is for first North American rights.
All text should be typed and double-spaced. Fiction submissions
should be eight thousand words or less. Poetry submissions
should be limited to five poems or fewer.
Art may be submitted via print, slide, or in electronic format
(as an e-mail attachment or on a Zip disk). If you are submitting
electronically, note that we operate on Macintosh programs.
Please format your work accordingly. All art will be printed
in black and white.
Your submission should include a phone number, e-mail address
or other contact information that allows us to reach you with
queries. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope
and specify whether or not submissions need to be returned.
Unless otherwise indicated, we will assume we may recycle
unused manuscripts. You will be notified of acceptance or
rejection by mail.
Please note that we are unable to pay contributors. Contributors
will, however, receive a complimentary copy of the issue in
which their work appears.
The Portland Review accepts submissions all year except during the months of June, July, and August. To inquire about the status of your submission, write to or e-mail us. Please be understanding if there is a considerable delay between the mailing of your submission and our response; we are a small staff and receive over one hundred submissions each week.
To mail submissions:
